The read
The sun is peeking through the clouds at PNC Park as the Pirates look to finish off a series sweep against a reeling Orioles squad that has yet to find its footing on the road. Pittsburgh (5-3) has snatched the first two games of this set in dramatic, one-run fashion, and the situational data suggests they have the tactical upper hand to complete the job today.
The biggest factor on my card is how this Pittsburgh lineup specifically matches up against Chris Bassitt. Bassitt’s sinker-heavy approach is usually a strength, but it became a glaring liability against left-handed hitters last season, as evidenced by the massive .434 xwOBA he allowed to that side of the plate. The Pirates aren’t missing the opportunity to exploit that, stacking six left-handed or switch hitters in their lineup today. With Brandon Lowe and Ryan O'Hearn both locked in with an OPS north of 1.000, Bassitt is walking into a tactical buzzsaw. Even if he finds the command that eluded him in his first start, he’s facing a group that is seeing the ball incredibly well right now.
While Braxton Ashcraft’s underlying metrics from 2025 suggest he might be due for some negative regression, he showed plenty of poise in his six-inning debut earlier this week. More importantly, the discrepancy between these two bullpens is massive right now. The Orioles' (3-5) relief unit has been shaky all series, blowing late leads in consecutive games, while the Pirates' bullpen has been nails, punctuated by a dominant one-hit performance over the final four innings on Saturday. With Gregory Soto rested and available to slam the door, Pittsburgh has the late-inning stability that Baltimore currently lacks. The Pirates are riding a four-game win streak; I’m not betting against the hot hand in a sweep spot.
