Boston snapped a five-game skid yesterday, but they’re laying -144 today with a rotation that has three starters on the shelf and a defense that has already coughed up six errors in the first week.

The edge here starts with Randy Vásquez. If you’re looking at his 2025 expected metrics, you’re looking at a different pitcher. The 2026 version of Vásquez has found an extra 2.5 mph on his heater, sitting at 95 and touching 97, paired with a sweeping curveball that absolutely stifled Detroit in his debut. That velocity jump is the Great Equalizer. He’s facing a Red Sox lineup that leans heavily on left-handed sticks like Wilyer Abreu and Marcelo Mayer. In this weather, with that wind knocking down everything hit toward the short porch in right, Boston’s primary power source is effectively neutralized.

On the other side, Connelly Early is a talented lefty, but he’s walking into a buzzsaw of a right-handed stack. Even with the early-season slumps, you don't want to navigate a heart of the order featuring Fernando Tatis Jr., Xander Bogaerts, and Manny Machado when they have the platoon advantage. San Diego is playing the cleaner brand of baseball right now, boasting a .988 fielding percentage compared to Boston’s sloppy .976. In a game where the elements are going to suppress scoring, the team that doesn't beat itself usually walks away with the win. With a fully rested Mason Miller and his 103-mph gas waiting in the 9th, I’ll take the plus money on the Padres to even this series.
