Tigers at Diamondbacks

The desert heat is reaching record highs as the Detroit Tigers and Arizona Diamondbacks prepare for the second act of this early-season clash under the closed roof of Chase Field. Arizona took the opener in a 9-6 slugfest yesterday, and while the betting market is treating this as a dead pick'em, the momentum currently resides with the home team in Phoenix.

The deciding factor for me tonight isn’t last year’s career numbers; it’s the massive divergence in form we saw throughout the final weeks of Spring Training. Brandon Pfaadt enters his season debut following a dominant March where he posted a 0.90 ERA and carried a perfect game deep into his final outing. He’s debuted a new high-whiff sweeper that addresses his historical struggles with the long ball. On the other side, Casey Mize has admitted his mechanics were out of sync during a spring where he posted a 7.15 ERA. In the first week of the season, I’m betting on the arm that is already locked in over the one still searching for a rhythm.

Arizona’s offense is also clicking at the right time, led by a resurgent Corbin Carroll who looked every bit like an elite playmaker yesterday with a home run and a triple. The addition of Nolan Arenado has stabilized the Diamondbacks' infield defense, providing elite support for a fly-ball pitcher like Pfaadt. While the Tigers (2-2) have their own young stars performing well, specifically Colt Keith and Kevin McGonigle who are both hitting over .440, Arizona’s (1-3) lineup depth and the confidence gained from yesterday's nine-run explosion give them the edge. I expect Pfaadt to maintain his spring form and the Diamondbacks to secure their second straight home win.
