Giants at Padres

His spring training performance was eye-opening, recording 17 strikeouts in just 9.2 innings, and he has introduced a new cutter to combat the left-handed bats that plagued him last season. He faces a Giants offense that is currently in a deep freeze, hitting a collective .154 and averaging just one run per game through their first four contests. Even if the Giants’ lefties like Luis Arráez and Rafael Devers find gaps, the Giants have yet to show they can string together the hits necessary to capitalize.

The fresh injury to Padres setup man Jason Adam, who was sidelined with a quad injury just yesterday, does put more pressure on the middle of the San Diego bullpen. However, the Giants’ own offensive struggles and the fact that their bullpen is missing key arms like Jason Foley and Sam Hentges levels that playing field. The Padres’ defense is fundamentally more sound, committing significantly fewer errors than San Francisco last season, which provides the necessary support for Márquez to work deep. In a low-scoring environment where every ball in play matters, I’m taking the value on the home underdog to even the series.
