Angels at Cubs

In these 45-degree conditions, every fly ball becomes an adventure, and the game will likely be decided by whoever can keep the ball on the grass and out of the heavy Chicago air.

The value tonight sits squarely with the Los Angeles Angels because of a massive disparity in starting pitching form. Jose Soriano was untouchable in his 2026 debut, carving through the Houston Astros for six scoreless innings while striking out seven. Soriano’s identity is built on a high-velocity sinker and splitter that induce a heavy volume of ground balls—the exact profile you want when the wind is blowing in at nearly 20 mph. Conversely, Jameson Taillon makes his season debut following a Spring Training that can only be described as a disaster. Taillon surrendered 10 home runs in just 13.1 innings of work, resulting in a staggering 17.55 ERA. While the wind might help keep some of those long balls in the park tonight, a pitcher struggling that much with command and hard contact is a massive liability against an Angels' top of the order that is currently locked in.

Mike Trout is off to a vintage start, hitting .353 with a 1.248 OPS, and he is flanked by Zach Neto, whose increased exit velocity has been one of the early stories of the young season. While the Cubs boast a superior defense and a much deeper bullpen, the Angels’ path to victory relies on Soriano pitching deep enough to bridge the gap to the late innings. If Soriano provides another six or seven innings of ground-ball-heavy dominance, he effectively neutralizes the Angels' relief depth issues. At +120, we are getting a significant plus-money price on the better-performing starter against a pitcher who spent the last month as a human launchpad.
