The read
Sunday afternoon baseball from Daikin Park brings us the series finale as the Angels look to take three of four from a Houston team still buzzing from Saturday’s massive comeback. Tatsuya Imai brings elite stuff from Japan and a perfect spring training resume, but laying -181 on a pitcher making his major league debut is a steep price. The Angels' lineup has been a force so far this week, scoring 18 runs over three games, led by a fully healthy Mike Trout. Trout is absolutely locked in right now, slashing .556 with a 1.956 OPS out of the gate. Alongside lefties like Nolan Schanuel and Josh Lowe, Los Angeles has the right mix of power and balance to welcome Imai to the big leagues the hard way.
The market is heavily discounting the Angels based on starter Jack Kochanowicz's disastrous 2025 season, where he posted a 6.81 ERA and a 1.75 WHIP. However, Kochanowicz showed a completely different profile this spring, adding over a mile per hour to his sinker to sit 96-97 mph while pitching to a 1.62 ERA over 16.2 innings. He is a contact-oriented pitcher facing a dangerous, right-handed-heavy Astros lineup featuring Jose Altuve and Carlos Correa, which carries obvious risk. But if that increased velocity allows his sinker to consistently induce ground balls, he can navigate the short porch in left field and keep the Angels in a competitive position.
Furthermore, Los Angeles holds a distinct advantage in the late innings. The Astros' bullpen has been heavily taxed and inconsistent over the first three games, blowing leads and logging high pitch counts in the opening matchups. Meanwhile, the Angels' relievers were dominant in their two victories, combining for 7.2 scoreless, hitless innings to close the door. At +152, the price is simply too high on an unproven rookie starter facing a team that has already beaten Houston twice in this building. I'll gladly take the plus-money value on an Angels squad that is seeing the ball extremely well right now.

2Mike TroutOVER 1.5 H+R+RBI H+R+RBI+100

Betting against a player as hot as Mike Trout right now is a dangerous proposition. Trout is hitting .556 with two home runs in the first three games of the season, showing he is fully healthy and locked in. He faces Tatsuya Imai, a Japanese right-hander making his MLB debut.
While Imai had a perfect spring, the leap to facing a Hall of Fame talent like Trout in a regular-season environment is significant. Trout's veteran presence and current timing give him a massive edge over a debutant who may struggle with early-inning jitters or the higher K-zone standards of the MLB. Batting second in the Angels' order, Trout is guaranteed 4-5 plate appearances.
Given he only needs a single extra-base hit or a hit and a run scored to clear this 1.5 line, the value at even money (+100) is significant. Risk: Imai's high-velocity arsenal translates immediately and suppresses the Angels' top of the order in a low-scoring debut.
Yordan AlvarezOVER 2.5 H+R+RBI H+R+RBI+106

Yordan Alvarez faces one of the most favorable matchups in the early 2026 season. Angels starter Jack Kochanowicz was statistically one of the worst regular starters in 2025, posting a 5.77 ERA and a 1.54 WHIP. More concerning for the Angels is his 6.81 xERA, indicating he was fortunate not to allow more damage.
Alvarez, batting second, is positioned to exploit Kochanowicz's high contact rate and tendency to allow baserunners. With Jose Altuve's high OBP in front of him and the Astros' offense finding its rhythm with 11 runs on Saturday, Alvarez has multiple paths to clearing 2.5 Hits+Runs+RBIs. Whether through a home run (projected at 22.7%) or driving in runners that Kochanowicz historically allows on base, the volume floor is exceptionally high here.
Risk: If Kochanowicz exhibits vastly improved command in his 2026 debut and the Astros' offense regresses to their Opening Day shutout form.
